Research shows there’s a right way and a right time to develop the fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills that benefit kids for their whole lives. Just as important, we’ve learned that by making the process fun for kids, they will stay active and have greater chances to become top-level athletes.
Because kids who have fun being active are more likely to stay active for life.

In 2010, Sport Manitoba took a major step forward by developing a new home base in the Sport for Life Centre. A first in Canada, the new Sport for Life Centre at 145 Pacific Avenue in the Exchange District, is a one-stop resource for creating a healthier community by helping athletes and youth learn, grow and succeed in sport.
While the renovation of phase 1 of this 100-year old heritage building is complete, fundraising is underway to realize the full vision of phase 2 which includes the building of a training fieldhouse and new programming opportunities for our community.
Our goals are simple - more kids playing and enjoying sport, more adults participating and getting involved and more Manitobans winning on the world stage.

The Bud Tinsley Sport Leadership Scholarship was created in memory of Robert (Bud) Tinsley by his family and friends to recognize a Manitoba student athlete who demonstrates similar leadership traits that were attributable to Bud. Bud was introduced to organized football in high school and his athletic career and contributions persisted from there. Bud had a reputation as a fearsome tackler and played that position for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1950-1960, serving as the perennial team captain and played in Grey Cup championships in 1958 and 1959. His numerous awards included: induction into the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame, the CFL Hall of Fame and four time inductee into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his outstanding athlete results, Bud gave tirelessly of himself as active volunteer leader with the Shriners, community groups and the sport community throughout his life. The recipient of this $500 scholarship will be selected from among the successful MFFS Scholarship recipients.

| How Soccer is Changing |
| ...cusses the changes coming to soccer.
This past weekend the Globe and Mail printed a story called "The case for killing the competition". It also discusses the changes coming to soccer in Canada.
What is happening in Soccer in Winnipeg This Spring?
Changes to the way 9-year-old soccer players will learn and play the game are now being phased in by Winnipeg's five soccer districts. The Greater Council of Winnipeg Community Centres and all the districts have committed to a standard approach for soccer programs for ages 4-8 however there will be some variations from district to district in how 9-year-old soccer is delivered in 2012.... |

| ..., music and videos. Sport should be no different.
Kids are developing physically and mentally. Facilities, equipment, games, and practices will change to accommodate the physical and cognitive level of the child. These modifications are to help our kids’ progress in a positive way while learning skills, developing confidence and enjoying physical activity.
Change #3: Game Structure
The more children get to touch the ball or puck…the quicker they improve their skills. This means smaller playing fields or surfaces, fewer players and more opportunities to practice as opposed to playing more games. When players can have their own puck or ball they develop their skills much faster, and they have more fun while they’re at it. It doesn’t matter if it’s tennis, soccer, hockey; the game structure needs to be modified for the developmental level of the kids.
