Swan Valley to host 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games
Premier Gary Doer has announced $150,000 in support of Swan Valley’s successful bid to host the 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.
“I’m extremely pleased to be here to make this announcement today,” said Doer. “It’s the culmination of months of hard work by not only the people of Swan River, but neighboring communities as well. The 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games will leave a legacy of facilities that will be enjoyed by residents for years to come.”
“The Power Smart Manitoba Games are a major sport development program of Sport Manitoba, contributing significantly to the development of athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and communities throughout the province,” said Sport Manitoba President and CEO Jeff Hnatiuk. “We congratulate Swan River on their successful bid and we look forward to supporting them in fulfilling their plans to stage the 2012 event."
The 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games will be held mid July 2012 involving close to 10,000 participants, volunteers and staff throughout the province.
Sporting events include Archery, Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Golf, Sailing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Triathlon.
Communities submit a formal bid package detailing plans for athlete services, hospitality, volunteers, organization structure, sport legacy and finances.
This year four communities submitted bids: Killarney, Selkirk, Steinbach and Swan Valley. The Swan Valley bid includes the town of Swan River, RM of Swan River, Town of Minitonas, RM of Minitonas and the Village of Benito
The host site selecting committee, consisting of members from the Manitoba Games Council and Sport Manitoba, evaluated the bids and also performed on-site facility evaluations.
The Power Smart Manitoba Games take place every two years, alternating between summer and winter events.
The economic impact of hosting the Power Smart Manitoba Games is approximately $1 million.
