Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Recipients Announced
Biathlete Megan Imrie of Falcon Lake and Racquetball player Michael Burgess of Brandon have been selected as this year's recipients of the Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship.
A member of the National Junior team since 2001, the 20-year old Imrie placed 2nd in Sprint and 2nd in Mass Start at the 2005 Nationals. At the World Youth Championships in Finland she finished 35th in the Individual competition. More recently, Imrie was 1st in Pursuit, 2nd in Sprint and 4th in Individual at the Junior World Trials. At World Juniors in Presquile, Maine Imrie was 33rd in the 10km Pursuit and 37th in the 7.5km Pursuit. Imrie is enrolled at the University of Manitoba studying Psychology.
The 18-year old Burgess has won national titles at 12, 14 and 16 and was 3rd at World Juniors in 2004. Last year he was 2nd in Boys 18-and-under Doubles and 4th in Boys 18-and-under Singles at the Canadian Junior Racquetball Championships and more recently was a respectable 9th at the Racquetball Canada National Senior Team Singles Selection Event. Sport Manitoba's Male Youth Athlete of the Year for 2004, Burgess is working toward his Bachelor of Science degree at Brandon University.
The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Endowment Fund provides two annual scholarships of $3000 each to a male and female high performance athlete enrolled in a post secondary institution in Manitoba. Selection is based on an athlete's sport and academic standing.
The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship was established as a legacy of the 1999 Pan American Games to provide financial support for Manitoba's high performance athletes while commemorating the Manitoba visit of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal in 1999. The scholarship is administered by Sport Manitoba.
