Snider to Carry Manitoba Flag at 2007 Western Canada Summer Games
WINNIPEG – 19-year old David Snider, the best badminton player in Canada for his age, will be Team Manitoba’s Opening Ceremonies flag-bearer when the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games get underway in Strathcona County, Alberta on Friday, August 3rd. Snider will lead a contingent that includes 319 athletes, 64 coaches and managers and 18 mission staff.
“I consider being named flag-bearer an honour and a privilege,” said Snider. “I feel it is recognition for the hard work I have put into my sport and am excited to be leading the team into an important multi-sport competition like the Western Canada Summer Games.”
No stranger to international competition, Snider recently had an impressive run at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro reaching the quarterfinals in men’s singles before being eliminated from the competition.
Winner of Badminton Manitoba’s Outstanding Achievement Award for his accomplishments over the past year, Snider was the gold medalist in men’s singles at the 2007 Under 19 National Championships. He also represented Canada at the 2007 Pan American Badminton Championships losing in the round of 32 and was a member of the National Team that competed at the 2006 World Junior Championships in South Korea.
An engineering student at the University of Manitoba, Snider is a recipient of a $1,000 Sport Manitoba Foundation for Sport Scholarship that is available to athletes who compete at the provincial level or higher and maintain a high level of academic standing while demonstrating a commitment to amateur sport through their involvement in coaching, officiating and volunteer activities.
Snider, who started playing badminton at the age of five, contributes his time to the growth and development of the sport as a coach at the Wildewood Club teaching skills to younger players.
Snider’s long term goals are to qualify for the 2012 Olympics and compete on the World Cup Circuit.
