Team Manitoba’s Honourary Team Captains Announced for 2007 WCSG
WINNIPEG - Team Manitoba today announced that former Olympic Rower Jeff Powell and former National Team Cyclist Erin Carter are the team’s Honourary Team Captains for the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games.
“We are honoured to have two more of Manitoba’s most successful athletes be a part of our inter-provincial games program by recognizing them as honorary captains,” said Team Manitoba Chef de Mission Ted Bigelow. “Erin and Jeff had exceptional world class athletic careers and remain proactive in sport as leaders and coaches and are great role models for all our young athletes on Team Manitoba.”
Team Manitoba will benefit from the national and international experience of Powell and Carter to help prepare and inspire Manitoba’s participants as they head to Strathcona County, Alberta to compete at the Western Canada Summer Games, August 3 to 11.
As a member of the men’s eights, Powell won World Rowing Championships in 2002 and 2003 and placed fifth at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
“The experiences I had as a junior athlete went a long way to shaping the competitor, athlete and person I have become. “ said Powell. “I never would have had international success without the building blocks having been laid.”
Carter was a member of the Canadian National Cycling Team for nine years. She participated in multiple world championships, the Pan American and Commonwealth Games and is a former Western Canada and Canada Games competitor.
“Representing your team, your sport and your province at a Games event is one of the most rewarding experiences in life,” said Carter. “My first Western Canada Games experience helped to develop me as an athlete and as a person.”
The Western Canada Summer Games are held every four years and provide athletes with an opportunity to prepare for the Canada Games and other national and international competitions. The 2007 Games include 16 sports and 23 events with athletes participating from the four western provinces and three territories.
