Carman to Host 2008 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games
The Honourable Eric Robinson, Minister responsible for Sport, today announced the Town of Carman has been selected to host the 2008 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games. The games are tentatively scheduled for August 11 th to 17 th, 2008.
"I congratulate Carman on its successful bid to host these games which are the largest ongoing multi sport event in the province bringing together thousands of athletes, volunteers and spectators," said Robinson. "The Summer Games provide an attainable goal for young athletes who dream of accomplishing great things."
The Power Smart Manitoba Games are held every two years alternating between summer and winter events. The games involve over 3,500 participants from across Manitoba who qualify at the regional level in selected competition in 12 core sports. More than 1,600 participants advance to the provincial finals. The games are developmental in nature featuring athletes between the ages of 12 and 21 and for many are a stepping-stone to higher levels of competition like the Canada Games and Western Canada Games.
This event will mark the second time that the Town of Carman has hosted the Manitoba Games.
"The Manitoba Games Council is excited to be returning to Carman," said Council Chair Bernie Chrisp. "The community hosted the very successful Manitoba Winter Games in 1990 and that same volunteer enthusiasm and commitment is certain to make the 2008 Summer Games an outstanding event."
Through Sport Manitoba, the Province of Manitoba provides the provincial host community with an operational grant of $75,000 and a facility capital development grant of up to $75,000 that must be matched by the host community. The provincial host community also receives upwards of $100,000 in sponsorship revenues from the Manitoba Games Council while raising an additional $150,000 to operate the provincial games.
The Power Smart Manitoba Games have an estimated economic impact of over $1 million for host communities who in past have realized financial legacies of as much as $60,000, new and improved facilities and significant community and volunteer development.
Next year the 2006 Power Smart Manitoba Games will be held in Beausejour from March 6 th to 12 th.
