TWO MANITOBANS OFF TO OLYMPIC ACADEMY OF CANADA
From June 21st to 27th, Erin Carter of Ste. Anne and Tara Funke of Steinbach will be in Vancouver for the Olympic Academy of Canada, a biannual leadership program designed for Canadians with a strong interest in the Olympic Movement.
“It is a huge honour to be going. At first I was on the waiting list then I got the call that someone had dropped out, which meant there was a spot for me,” said an excited Funke, who is President of the Altona Curling Club, a level 3 Hockey Referee, part of the Canada Games Mission Staff, and a radio host with Golden West Radio.
The Academy program provides current and future sport leaders with opportunities to learn about and discuss the aspirations, achievements, issues and current status of the Olympic Movement with people from other sports and within the Olympic family.
“The theme of the program is Making a Difference and as an elite athlete I am particularly interested in what athletes can do to make a difference to create a stronger sport culture in Canada, ” said Erin Carter, Public Relations Officer for Sport Manitoba. Carter is also a graduate student at Royal Roads University looking at athletes as social change agents in the Canadian Sport System.
Among the line-up of activities and presenters for the Academy are Dick Pound, Past Chair of the World-Anti-Doping Association, Chris Rudge, CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, and John Furlong, President and CEO of the 2010 Vancouver Organizing Committee.
