Norman Games Bring Together Athletes From Across the North

Over five hundred athletes from eighteen communities throughout northern Manitoba came to Thompson from February 22 nd to the 24 th to participate in the 2008 Norman Winter Games presented by Calm Air. Oxford House - Bunibonibee First Nation, with a total population of 1,700, led the way with a total of 93 athletes participating in four of the seven sports; which included badminton, basketball, five pin bowling, cross country skiing, hockey, table tennis and volleyball.

Manitoba’s longest standing annual multi-sport event attracted participants from as far away as Shamattawa, Norway House, Opaskawayk Cree Nation, St. Theresa Point, Pikwitonei, God’s Lake Narrows, Wabowden, Gillam, Oxford House, Lac Brochet, South Indian Lake, Flin Flon, Nelson House, Cross Lake, Split Lake, Chemawawin, Cormorant and The Pas.

The goal of the Norman Winter Games is to:

  • Provide opportunities for the development of community-based athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.
  • Strengthen regional unity and inter-community participation through sport.
  • Provide hosting communities with a legacy of enhanced equipment as well as officials and volunteer development.

Our partnership with Calm Air will help to ensure that a financial legacy remains within each host community long after the Games come to completion. We look forward to the 2009 Norman Winter Games, with Norway House as our host community!”
