Five Communities in Running for 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Games
Sport Manitoba and the Manitoba Games Council have received bids from five Manitoba communities wanting to the host the Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games in 2010.
The communities of Killarney, Portage, Selkirk, Thompson and a joint bid from Minnedosa-Neepawa have all submitted formal applications to be the host community for the provincial games in March of 2010.
"The interest in hosting the Games is high because communities recognize their value as a sport and community development initiative," said Jeff Hnatiuk, President & CEO of Sport Manitoba. "The estimated economic impact of hosting the Games has consistently been in excess of one million dollars while leaving a legacy of enhanced facilities, experienced volunteers and rekindled community spirit."
Two of the communities have previously hosted Manitoba Games. Minnedosa-Neepawa hosted the Summer Games in 1992. Thompson held the Winter Games in 1994.
The next step in the selection process will be site evaluation tours early in the New Year. A formal announcement on the provincial host site will be made in March 2007.
The 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games will feature competition in Badminton, Male and Female Curling, Male and Female Hockey, Figure Skating, 5-Pin Bowling, Artistic Gymnastics, Cross Country Skiing, Male and Female Volleyball and Special Olympics 5-Pin Bowling.
Manitoba’s largest ongoing multi-sport event, the Power Smart Manitoba Games attract upwards of 3500 participants and involve over 2000 volunteers every two years at the regional and provincial levels.
The 2008 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games will take place in Carman in August 2008. For more information on the Power Smart Manitoba Games visit the website at www.manitobagames.ca
