Sport Expo Exceeds Fundraising Goals - More Underprivileged Kids To Benefit

Organizers of the 2nd Sport Expo presented by Great-West Life in support of KidSport held last month today announced the event greatly surpassed its fundraising target, generating $118,000 in revenue for the children’s charity in Manitoba.

"The overwhelming success of this year’s event is largely due to the generous donations of our corporate sponsors that was supplemented by additional revenue raised through our display booths, equipment sales, rainbow auction and ticket sales," said Sport Expo Chair Bill Morrissey. "We are indebted to everyone in the community for their tremendous support and to Sport Manitoba and our volunteers for their superb efforts in planning and organizing the event."

Sport Expo was held on Sunday, March 19th, 2006 at the MTS Centre with an original goal of raising $100,000. The first Sport Expo held at the former Winnipeg Arena in 2004 raised $65,000.

This year’s event featured over 50 interactive sport displays by Provincial Sport Organizations, Winnipeg’s largest ever garage sale of gently used sports equipment, the Optimist Foundation Rainbow Auction and autograph and photos sessions with some of Manitoba’s leading Olympic, amateur and professional athletes.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be designated for use province-wide, enabling financially disadvantaged children participate in sport by helping to offset the cost of their sports registration.

Funding will also be made available to support SportsConnection - a new KidSport initiative that will enable the Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg to expand opportunities for youth during non-school hours. The initiative will also help youth make the transition from informal after school recreation to participating in organized sport programs with skills-based instruction and ongoing mentorship.
