Manitoba Claims Canada Games Centennial Cup
A gold medal in men's volleyball and silver in women's volleyball on the final day of competition at the 2005 Canada Summer Games boosted Team Manitoba in the points standings and earned the province the Centennial Cup for a fourth time.
The Centennial Cup is awarded to the province or territory that makes the greatest improvement from Summer Games to Summer Games or Winter Games to Winter Games. In determining the change in improvement, each province's performance in a sport is compared to its performance in the last Games.
Although Manitoba remained in 7th place overall with fewer medals than in 2001, Team Manitoba improved its overall performance by 5.5 points and edged out Games Flag Champion Ontario by a half-point to claim the Centennial Cup.
Manitoba previously won the Centennial Cup at the 1985 Canada Summer Games in Saint John, New Brunswick, the 1991 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, PEI and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland.
Manitoba is the first province to have won the award four times.
