Sport Manitoba Applauds Community Infrastructure Initiative
Winnipeg - Sport Manitoba President & CEO Jeff Hnatiuk says the City of Winnipeg’s commitment of $43 million to community centres and leisure facilities will have a significant impact on helping to meet the needs of community-based sport development through greater accessibility to facilities and increased program participation.
“Municipalities are a major partner and stakeholder in the province’s sport delivery system providing facilities and working with sport organizations to offer leadership and skill development opportunities to athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers” said Hnatiuk. “We are encouraged that the City of Winnipeg has made this a priority because improving sport and recreation facilities are priority strategies in our Manitoba Action Plan for Sport (MAPS) and the Canadian Sport Policy Federal-Provincial/Territorial Priorities for Collaboration Action.”
“Accessibility to safe and adequate facilities is the catalyst for sustainability of sport programs which in turn foster healthy lifestyles, improve our quality of life and strengthen the community” said Hnatiuk.
Increased participation and accessibility to sport and recreation is one of the key pillars targeted by both the Canadian Sport Policy and Manitoba Action Plan for Sport. Federal, provincial and territorial governments and their sport and recreation agencies have set a goal to increase participation in physical activity by 10% by 2012.
