Hockey Events Support KidSport

For anyone who has kids involved in hockey, it won’t come as a surprise that hockey can be expensive. With all of the equipment and ice time, travel and team gear, what was once our standard winter sport, now becomes out of reach for many Manitoba kids and their families.

Hockey and hockey lovers are out to help bridge that gap in our Province.

Recently, Winkler, Manitoba was fortunate to be chosen as the sight for CBC’s 2008 Hockey Day in Canada. Aside from all of the wonderful events, special guests and Stanley Cup viewings that took place during Hockey Day in Canada, this event will have a lasting effect on amateur hockey in Manitoba. KidSport Manitoba will receive the proceeds from CBC’s fundraising online hockey memorabilia auction held in early February. This means that KidSport will receive upwards of $30,000 to go towards helping disadvantaged Manitoba kids pay their hockey registration fees.

The NHLPA will match the auction dollar amount raised by donating the equivalent in new hockey equipment, which KidSport will also make available to kids in need. 2008 is turning out to be the year of the Rink Rat!

And the help does not stop there.

Locally hockey lovers are also stepping up to help all kids get involved in the sport they can’t live without. Hockey enthusiast and coach Ray Dubois and his supporters, are combining their desire to provide all levels of players with the chance to experience an All Star game with the chance to help more kids get out of the stands and onto the ice.

Saturday, March 15 will see Minor Pee Wee, Pee Wee and Minor Bantam players from across the city taking part in the KidSport All Star game. Hosted at the Dutton Arena, this event was the brainchild of Ray who believed that all kids should have the chance to take part in a skills competition and play in their own All Star game – something many players may have only experienced on TV until now.

Funds raised from the KidSport All Star day go to KidSport, and in turn will allow countless kids the opportunity to experience sport, many for the first time. So if you too want to help Kidsport, come out to the Dutton Arena and support a great event, for a great cause.
