Sports Selected for 2008 Manitoba Summer Games
Sport Manitoba in conjunction with the Manitoba Games Council has announced the twelve core sports that have been selected for the 2008 Manitoba Summer Games.
New from 2004 will see the return of sailing to the Manitoba Games program after an absence of one games and basketball (male and female), which has previously been contested as a winter games sport move to the summer schedule.
Other individual core sports for 2008 include archery, athletics, golf, swimming, table tennis and triathlon. Other team sports include baseball, soccer (male and female), female softball and beach volleyball (male and female).
Manitoba Games sports are reviewed after each set of Games and must apply for the next Games where they are reassessed along with any new sports that may apply.
The host of the 2008 Manitoba Summer Games will be announced in August 2005. Communities interested in hosting will go through a formal bid and site selection process beginning in the new year with bids due in March.
The Manitoba Games are the province’s largest on-going multi-sport event, held every two years and geared at participants between the ages of 10 and 21.
The 2006 Manitoba Winter Games will take place in Beausejour in March 2006. Those games will feature competition in alpine ski, badminton, cross-country ski, curling, figure skating, five pin bowling, Special Olympics bowling, artistic gymnastics, male and female hockey and male and female volleyball.
