In partnership with the Hanover School Division (HSD) the Host Society of the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games facilitated the construction of an athletics track. Construction for the track was completed by Maple Leaf Construction Ltd. and landscaping was completed by Reimer Soils and Blatz Landscaping.
Located at Stonybrook Middle School in Steinbach, the track is an asphalt, 6 lane 400m, with 2 straightaways, and IAAF Standard. In order to ensure longevity the track has proper drainage and grading of the infield and outfield and additional inner lane asphalt to protect the inside lane from crumbling/mower damage. The field includes two jumping runways and pits for long and triple jump, and space for high jump and throwing events.
The track will serve as the venue for Athletics at the Games and will be the primary legacy from an infrastructure perspective in the city of Steinbach. This new track is meeting a community need, as there is currently no track or venue for Athletics in Steinbach. The track will also act as a showpiece for the next generation of young athletes in the region. The track will contribute to the development of essential youth physical literacy skills as outlined by the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) program by Canadian Sport for Life and provincial sport organizations.
