Cross-country runners sprint to medals

By Emma Dueck

Wednesday was the last chance for participants in athletics to leave the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games with a medal around their necks.

Winnipeg Gold athletes swept the top placings in the individual bantam races. Kaitlyn Hinrichsen took home the female gold medal and the male gold went to Jayden Bryant, who struggled in the final leg of the race letting an Eastman runner pass by him, but in a burst of energy he took the gold by less than two seconds.

Eastman came together in their final competitions, earning themselves two team gold medals in the male bantam and female midget divisions.

Interlake left the event with one gold medal in the female bantam team category. Central also came together to take home gold in the male midget team category and team member Kyana Brown took home the female midget first place title.

Brown is proud of her last run, considering it’s her first gold individual medal. She feels content leaving the Summer Games the way she has.

“Training, dedication, hard work and good coaches” Brown described as the key factors to her success.
