Girl basketball squads shooting for gold

by Emma Dueck

All of Winnipeg Gold and Interlake’s hard work these past few days has paid off—these two teams are going for gold.

Winnipeg Gold is the only girls’ basketball team to maintain a perfect winning streak through the entire tournament. They were consistently ahead of Team Central in their semi-final game, never letting a quarter end with them behind. Winnipeg Gold is looking to live up to their name and take home the winning title Wednesday morning at 10:45 a.m.

Interlake, with a 2-1 record, will also vie for gold. Winnipeg Blue opened the scoring but Interlake rallied back and never relented. Winnipeg Blue came close in the third quarter, tying the game 35-35 with 3:30 minutes left on the clock but by 3 minutes they were back ahead at 37-35, showing everyone why they made it this far in the first place.

Team Interlake guard Sarah Buchan says she feels confident heading into the gold medal game.

"Talking on the bench and communicating is what made us come together as a team and get us to this place", she says.
