Interlake Enjoys Blazing Start

By Emma Dueck

A hot day on the pitch led to a hot start for Interlake in the girls soccer tournament Thursday.

Interlake overwhelmed Winnipeg Blue 5-0 in their opening game. Alexis Vermeulen, one of the youngest players on Interlake, led the scoring with two goals. Vermeulen, who is 11 years old, has been playing soccer for nine years. Three of her teammates, Hailey Witko, Lauren Kelbert and Maggie Senchuk, also contributed with one goal each.

There were shutouts aplenty in Thursday’s other games; Norman beat Parkland 4-0, Westman downed Winnipeg Gold 3-0 and Eastman surpassed Central 4-0. In some of the other games, Central bounced back with a 2-1 win against Winnipeg Gold and Eastman and Westman played to a draw.

After more round-robin matches, Friday is highlighted by crossover games to determine the fifth to eighth positions. The medal games are on Saturday.
