Interlake walked away from their match with Winnipeg Gold as the only undefeated team in the softball tournament.
Entering their semi-final game Friday, the Interlake and Winnipeg Gold softball teams were even at three wins and no losses. Interlake scored three runs in the first inning, letting Winnipeg Gold know they meant business. Winnipeg Gold would hold Interlake there for the next three innings until the fifth when Interlake put two more on the board. Winnipeg Gold mounted a short rally in the seventh and finally scored their first two runs, but Interlake would shut them down soon after and went on to win 5-2, clinching a berth in the gold medal game. They play the winner of Friday night’s Central vs. Winnipeg Gold for the gold medal Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
Interlake coach Brian Shewchuk attributes their success to the team’s familiarity with each other, many of whom have played together on the Interlake Phillies. Coach Shewchuk says that the team really gelled after playing in the Ringneck Tournament in Sioux Falls earlier this year.
