Interlake wins rematch for girls volleyball gold

By Ian Froese

They swung back and forth until Interlake commanded the third and final set to earn the gold medal in girls volleyball Saturday.

Interlake won the first set 25-19, fell by the same 25-19 score to Winnipeg Gold and then rallied back to clinch the gold 15-6 in the deciding set at Clearspring Middle School.

The game was a rematch of a Thursday round-robin game when it was Winnipeg Gold that won in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24. Winnipeg Gold had been undefeated prior to Saturday, also beating Parkland, Winnipeg Blue and Central in two sets apiece in the process.

Outside of Interlake’s round-robin loss to Winnipeg Gold, they beat Eastman 2-0, Westman 2-0 and, to qualify, they needed three sets to dethrone Winnipeg Blue, 25-13, 22-25, 15-10.

The bronze belongs to Winnipeg Blue, who stretched the second set to 29-27 in order to beat Central before play went to a third set.
