Winnipeg Rivals Rematch for Title

By: Ashley Hoitink

Winnipeg Blue showed they are determined to get redemption against Winnipeg Gold after losing to them Monday. Winnipeg Blue now has that opportunity in Wednesday’s gold medal game after routing Team Westman in medal play.

Westman got off to a hot start at the beginning of the game on a 9-0 run, with Winnipeg Blue ice cold in shooting. Winnipeg Blue refocused by the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run in the first minute of the frame. Despite the fired up crowd and benches, Winnipeg Blue took a commanding lead 40-29 at the half. They could not be stopped at the three-point line, and continued to build their lead as the game wore on, defeating Westman 86-60.

Leading scorer for Winnipeg Blue was Joshua Charr with a game-high 20 points. Blue’s Shawn Maranan closely followed with 19 points. Riley Paul and Dayton Black had 13 points apiece for Westman.

In the first medal game, Winnipeg Gold showed why they remain undefeated in the tournament thus far. Halfway through the first they began controlling Parkland. This continued into the third when Winnipeg Gold opened up their lead, further outscoring Parkland 20-8 in the quarter. Favour Ugbah led Winnipeg Gold with 13 points in the 92-43 victory. David Muller had 16 points for Parkland.

Parkland will face Westman at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning for the bronze medal. Immediately after, Winnipeg Gold and Winnipeg Blue will compete at 10:45 a.m. for the gold medal in men’s basketball.
