Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Manitoba Foundation for Sports through Sport Manitoba, announced twenty student athlete scholarships totaling $15,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. This year’s recipients represent ten high schools, four universities and eleven sports.

This year’s high school recipients are:

Mitchell Billinkoff (photo - first on left)
• Graduated from The Gray Academy of Jewish Education and will be heading to U of M this fall.
• A Table Tennis athlete who won a bronze medal at nationals in 2008.
• Was named 2008 Jewish Athlete of the Year at the Y Sports Dinner. scholarships

Rachele Bosc (second from left)
• Graduated from Balmoral Hall School, will be playing for the Bisons this fall at U of M.
• She’s a hockey athlete who represented Manitoba in 2008 at both the National Aboriginal Hockey championships and the U18 Hockey Championships where the team won a bronze medal.

Nicole Dubois (third from left)
• A St.Mary’s Academy grad, she will be attending U of M in September.
• A cross country ski athlete who competes nationally and has taken NCCP coach training to give back to sport thru coaching youths.

Carleen Kruschel (third from right)
• Graduated from Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour, with no mark below 91% throughout high school. She will be playing for the U of W Wesmen in September.
• She was on the U17 provincial team with a top 10 finish at nationals and was named a graduating all star by Manitoba Volleyball association.

Alison Smith (second from right)
• A Kelvin High School grad and is off to U of M this fall.
• Is on team Manitoba for the sport of fencing where she won a bronze medal at Nationals in 2008, this result qualified her for the worlds championships.

Kevin Stevens (right side)
• Graduated from Dakota Collegiate and is off to McMaster University to play for their Volleyball team.
• Played on the U19 Provincial Volleyball team that earned a bronze medal at nationals.

Our high school recipients, who could not attend our presentation include:
• Alyssa Grant – Oak Park High School – Basketball
• Kristjana Schure – Swan Valley Regional Secondary School - Volleyball
• Matthew Stubler – Miles Macdonald Collegiate -Volleyball
• Brayden Duff - Garden City Collegiate - Basketball

University recipients, who recieved a $1000 scholarship:

Kayla Krentz univscholarship(photo - first on left)
• Will be starting her 4th year at the U of M in the faculty of education with aims of becoming a phys ed teacher.
• She plays Ringette on the Manitoba Jets team, which is part of the Western Conference of the National Ringette League.

Stephane Lenoski (second from left)
• Is entering his 3rd year at the U of M, where he is pursuing a Microbiology degree and plays for the Bisons Hockey team.
• Was a member of Team Canada that competed at the FISU World University Games winning a silver medal.

Amy Ogidan (second from right)
• Attends the University of Winnipeg where she plays Basketball for the Bisons and will be entering her 3rd year in the Kinesiology program.
• In 2008, received tournament mvp and Wesmen athlete of the month awards

Aislynn Torfason (represented in the photo by her mother - right side)
• Entering her 2nd year at Lakehead University where she is a member of the school’s Wrestling team and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Finished off her junior category year in 2008 with a bronze at nationals.

We’d also like to congratulate the following university athletes, who are unable to attend presentations due to training and work schedules:
• Patrick Boreskie – U of M – Swimming
• Justin Duff – U of W – Volleyball
• Jamee George – St Francis Xavier University - Rugby
• Bryn Lindsay – U of M – Athletics
• Meagan Smith – U of M – Hockey/Soccer
• Christopher Voth – U of M - Volleyball

In August 2008, former Winnipeg Blue Bomber receiver Milt Stegall became the Canadian Football League’s all-time leader for touchdowns. To recognize his accomplishment, the Province of Manitoba and Sport Manitoba created a scholarship in his name. Recipients of this year’s two Stegall scholarships have been selected from the 20 foundation scholarship winners.

The presentation of two scholarships, one to a graduating high school student entering a post secondary institution, and another to a top student in their second or subsequent year in a post secondary institution will be made on July 7th at the Winnipeg Blue Bomber Stadium by Stegall. More info
