Manitoba awarded Centennial Cup

Team Manitoba Centennial CupManitoba was recognized by Canada Games Council with the honour of the Centennial Cup. The award, presented at a media conference this morning, is given to a provincial or territorial team that shows the greatest improvement from one Summer Games to the next.

"This is an incredible honour and a tribute to the dedication our athletes and coaches have put into their sports in preparation for Canada Summer Games," said Barry Moroz, Manitoba Chef De Mission. "Manitoba's provincial sport organizations have always made Canada Games a developmental priority and it shows in the success achieved by our athletes. As the host province, we could not be more proud of the way our athletes carried themselves on and off the field of play."

Manitoba has now won the award six times since the award was introduced in 1971, previously receiving the honour in 1985, 1991, 1999, 2005, and 2013. Manitoba has been the recipient of the Centennial Cup more than any other province or territory. This is the second consecutive time Manitoba has received the Centennial Cup at the Canada Summer Games, previously receiving the award at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QC. Until now, no province or territory has ever won back-to-back Centennial Cups at the Canada Summer Games.

This year Manitoba set new provincial records for total medals and gold medals won at the Canada Games. Team Manitoba athletes won 42 medals, consisting of 10 gold, 15 silver, and 17 bronze. Manitoba athletes, coaches, and mission staff participated in the closing ceremonies of the Canada Summer Games at Investors Group Field today, led by flag-bearer Maddy Mitchell, who won five medals in canoe kayak at the Canada Summer Games.
