The Canada Games Sport for Life Centre Performance Run program is Winnipeg’s newest and most comprehensive running program for individuals looking to learn to run safely with efficiency and to improve their race times.  This program includes a personal pre-assessment with a physiotherapist, weekly group running sessions lead by a certified run coach; twenty-four strength training sessions tailored to runners, and education about running performance, foot health and injury prevention.

Is this program for me?

Whether you are running your first 5K or attempting to beat your personal best in the half or full marathon, our program and team of running coaches and performance specialists will keep you motivated and focused towards achieving your goals while reducing your risk of injury. 

What does the performance run program include?

Your performance team includes a physiotherapist, sport performance specialist and a certified run coach. Your team works collaboratively to reduce your risk of injury and personalizes your program to ensure you are as successful as possible! We'll also bring in a Pedorthist and Dietician for your workshops. We have a set schedule for many of your sessions. Should the program prove popular we will add schedule additional options. 1. Physical Assessment - Physiotherapist

Our Performance Run program includes a personal 90 minute physical assessment with one of our Sport Medicine Clinic physical therapists as a prerequisite to starting the Performance Run program. This assessment involves a detailed injury history, activity history, as well as a full physical assessment. The assessment cost is $130 in addition to the program registration fee and will be billed separately at the time of the assessment. This provides you the opportunity to bill your assessment to any secondary insurance you may have. Insurance details can be found here.  Once you have registered for our program your contact information will be sent to our Sport Medicine Clinic. They will contact you to book your pre-physical assessment. You may also contact our medicine clinic directly. Please let them know that you have registered for the Performance Run program. Your assessment must be completed by March 10th.

2. Customized Conditioning - Strength & Conditioning Specialist

Using your physical assessment results, our Sport Performance Specialists will design a customized strength and conditioning program to meet your specific needs. To ensure your success your program includes twenty-four strength and conditioning sessions lead by certified personal trainer Davis Chase. Davis will keep you motivated and on the road to success safely, effectively and efficiently.

We have a set schedule for your strength & conditioning sessions. Should registration fill we will add more options and provide you the opportunity to switch sessions.

Beginner: Tuesdays & Thursdays at 12:00 – 1:00 pm in the Performance Centre
Intermediate/Advanced: Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:15 – 7:15 am in the Performance Centre

3. Guided Run Program - Certified Run Coach

To maximize your results your run program includes a weekly group run session with certified running coach Sheldon Reynolds (12 total). This includes access to our brand-new 160m Mondo track for indoor running sessions. Sheldon will also take you outdoors on pre-determined routes customized to your distance to explore the neighborhood and get you used to running outdoors. Sheldon has an amazing resume and the best attitude. If anyone can make running fun...it's Sheldon! Ask him all your running questions and get advice from one of the best! You can choose between two options: Wednesdays 6:30 am or 1:00 pm in the Fitness Centre.

4. Workshops - Feet, Training Zones & Nutrition

To maximize your results while reducing injury your program also includes a group workshop. Our workshop includes a session with our Medicine Clinic's certified Pedorthist Kirk Cook who will teach you about proper foot care. Our Sport Performance Specialists will present a session on training zones and you will also receive a nutrition talk with a registered dietitian. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 10-2 pm.

This program runs from March 19th – June 10th, 2018 at the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre.

If you require any additional resources to help improve your performance we have add-on services available, such as:

  • Running Economy (metabolic) and VO2 max assessment
  • “Bloodless” lactate threshold assessments to establish your optimal running pace
  • One-on-one nutritional services
  • Services offered by our Sport Medicine Clinic including: Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy, Shoe Prescription and Foot Care Assessments, Chiropractic and/or Sport Medicine Physician services, as indicated by your injury and/or needs.

What is my investment?

You will need to commit to three days of training with us. Sheldon will also recommend additional solo runs depending on your assessment results and your goals. Your trainer or physiotherapist may also recommend additional activities to complete on your own. Your financial investment is $439 + your physical therapy assessment is $130 - which you may be able to bill some or all to your private physiotherapy insurance coverage.
