Speaker: Kevin Beauchamp
This lecture will focus on athletes' underlying beliefs about their abilities in connection to determining long-term success or failure. Carol Dweck, PhD, has termed these underlying beliefs as “mindsets”. The research of Dr. Dweck has shown that individuals who cultivate a “growth mindset” (rather than a “fixed mindset”) are more open to new challenges and are also more resilient when they experience failure – two essential qualities of the successful athlete. This lecture will be geared towards athletes and coaches. However, parents will also benefit as the main principles of growth mindsets apply to younger children as well. Attendees will learn what exactly a growth mindset is, how to cultivate it themselves, as well as in the athletes they coach.
