Fitness Centre Launches First Children's Programs

New Programs Launched Targeting Young Winnipeg Kids

We are excited to now offer Fit Kids Healthy Kids inspired youth programming to Winnipeg's general public through the Canada Games Sport for Life Fitness Centre.

These programs provide the opportunity for children to learn skills like running, jumping, throwing and catching as well as many others through games and activities that are non-competitive and inclusive. We believe in a holistic  approach to these skills through various activities such as low organized games, stationed play, dance, modified sport and free play.

Tell Me More!

Sport Manitoba's mandate is to lead and support sport for life through access, participation, and achievement in sport by all Manitobans. This includes our youngest kids. A few years ago we partnered with Doctors Manitoba to launch a program called Fit Kids Healthy Kids.

Our Fit Kids Healthy Kids program teaches children and their adult leaders the fundamentals of movement that make kids confident and competent in sport, recreation, and life. The goal is fit, healthy kids that are active for life. It targets inner city schools, isolated rural communities and First Nation/Metis communities
throughout the province. We are excited to now offer Fit Kids Healthy Kids inspired youth programming to Winnipeg's general public through the Canada Games Sport for Life Fitness Centre.

These programs are part of the Long Term Athlete Development plan (LTAD). Science, research and decades of experience all point to the same thing: kids and adults will get active, stay active, and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right things at the right times. This is the logic behind LTAD.

In Active Start (from 0-6 years) boys and girls need to be engaged in daily active play. Through play and movement, they develop the fundamental movement skills and learn how to link them together. At this stage developmentally appropriate activities will help participants feel competent and comfortable participating in a variety of fun and challenging activities and games.

In the FUNdamentals stage, participants develop fundamental movement skills in structured and unstructured environments for play.  The focus is on providing fun, inclusive, multi-sport, and developmentally appropriate sport and physical activity. These experiences will result in the participant developing a wide range of movement skill along with the confidence and desire to participate. (you can learn more here).
