Manitoba Dealt Difficult Defeats on Day Five

Several contests went down to the wire for Team Manitoba today with mixed results for the hosts. Some resulted in wins while others ended in heart-wrenching loss. Manitoba’s male basketball team won in overtime and the female soccer team scored a late winner in a 2-1 final. Meanwhile in beach volleyball, both the male and female teams were edged in the deciding sets of their respective games versus British Columbia, dashing both teams chances for a medal. Also on the court, Manitoba’s female team lost to Ontario in semifinal action sending them to a bronze medal match on Friday.

A late three-pointer in male basketball allowed Manitoba to reach overtime against Saskatchewan before clinching a 91-85 win at the Canada Game Sport for Life Centre. Later in the day, Manitoba’s female team hit the hardwood at Duckworth Centre in a semifinal matchup with Ontario that was broadcast on TSN. The home province kept the contest close through two quarters but Ontario pulled away in the second half to secure a 84-59 win. Manitoba will move onto a bronze medal match with Alberta on Friday at noon.

Both beach volleyball teams entered quarterfinal action today with a matchup against British Columbia. And in fairly mirrored efforts, the male and female teams forced them to a third set that each ended by the narrow margin of 15-13. The losses relegated both teams to placement games scheduled for 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Manitoba’s female soccer team hit the pitch today in a placement game against Saskatchewan. Team Manitoba pulled ahead with a late tally, helping secure a 2-1 win over their prairie rivals. Manitoba will play their final match tomorrow versus British Columbia at 1 p.m.

Pan Am Pool was the site of finals events in female 1-metre springboard and male 3-metre springboard today. A pair of Manitobans qualified in the female event with Mara George finishing seventh and Brooke Bouchard in 11th.

Tomorrow is chock full of action for Team Manitoba athletes with competitions scheduled in eight different sports.
