U18 curling moves into its final rounds today, with Winnipeg Blue and Team South squaring off for the men's gold medal, and Winnipeg Gold facing West 2 for women's gold. But for the skips of Winnipeg Blue and Winnipeg Gold, today isn't just a team effort: it's a family affair.

17 year-old Brett Walter and 16 year-old Meghan Walter are a brother-and-sister duo from Winnipeg returning for their second Manitoba Winter Games experience, seeking to improve on their performance from the 2014 Games in Morden.

Brett has no doubt exceeded his expectations: after falling short of the podium in 2014, Brett has all-new team through non-stop victory across all four matches leading up to finals, a triumph he simply described as “a little bit of momentum.”

That composure is one of the skills his coach Calvin Edie sets Brett and his team apart from others, along with a good head for strategy and a feel for the ice.

Fresh from her victory in the semi-finals, Meghan shared her brother's level head. “We haven't played to our full potential yet, but we just need to keep going. We had the goal in our minds, we thought we could do it, and we did.”

Meghan and her team are coached by the pair's father, Frank Walter, a lifelong curler himself. He's proud of both of his kids, and has high hopes for his daughter's team going into the finals. “They stayed patient, and overall, they played really well,” he said. “Hopefully we can come out on top.”

Despite representing different regions during the 2018 Winter Games, Brett and Meghan curl as a family requently. “We play mixed doubles together all the time. We definitely have a brother and sister bond in curling, and it's pretty cool.”
