Manitoba Loses a Legend

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of a great friend, not only in the sport community, but in the City of Winnipeg and in the Province of Manitoba as well. On Tuesday January 2, 2018 R. A. Sam Fabro passed away, with family by his side, less than a month after his 97th birthday. Sam Fabro

Inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 as an all-round Builder, Sam was accomplished athlete in his own right starring on the baseball diamond and in the hockey rink. Fabro won a Memorial Cup in 1941 with the Winnipeg Rangers and starred with the REO Flyers in senior hockey. He also started a game for the local Blue Bombers team in 1942 before his time in the Army.

Born in Udine, Italy on December 8, 1920, Fabro moved to Winnipeg as a child and gave back so much to the community that he loved. Fabro was Chairman of Baseball at the 1967 Pan Am Games, Chair of the Manitoba Games from 1974-78, Founder of the Manitoba Hockey Players Foundation and its Chair from 1966-80 and a Founder of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and long-time Chair. He served on the Board of Winnipeg Enterprises from 1967-73. He was a Founding Member of the Manitoba Marathon and Canoeathon. He served on the Board of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for almost two decades and was President from 1993-2000. And that was just his sport volunteer resume.

Sam also gave his time and energy to many other passions. The former Vice-Chair of the Manitoba Wildlife Foundation was a founding member of the Fort Whyte Centre and the main road into the preserve bears his name as does the annual Sammy Fabro Golf Classic in support of Fort Whyte. Misrecordia Hospital and the Manitoba Opera have also benefitted from Sam’s generosity and leadership. He was given the Order of the Buffalo in 1986, the Order of Canada in 1974 and was inducted into the Winnipeg Citizen’s Hall of Fame in 2013. Truly a pillar in the community.
