Medal Sights Start Monday

by Ian Froese

Rather than working for the weekend, a number of the athletes competing in the Phase 1 events are working for Wednesday.

Baseball (Stahn Field in Mitchell), male basketball (Steinbach Regional Secondary School), female basketball (Clearspring Middle School) sailing (West Hawk Lake) and cross-country (Steinbach Soccer Park) will each hand out their respective gold medals on Wednesday, with events beginning in the morning and medals delivered afterwards.

The first Summer Games medals will hang on necks beginning today. Medals in athletics events, held at the track at Stonybrook Middle School, will be doled out at noon and 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

Two rounds at Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club will wrap on Tuesday, with medals given to top golfers at 4:30 p.m., and that same day is also when the triathletes compete at St. Malo Provincial Park. The individual event wave commences at 9:30 a.m.

The Phase 2 sports, running Thursday to Saturday, include cycling at Sandilands Provincial Park and Steinbach, male and female soccer at Steinbach Soccer Park, softball at A.D. Penner Park, swimming at Steinbach Aquatic Centre, female volleyball at Clearspring Middle School and male volleyball at Steinbach Regional Secondary School.
