Winnipeg, MB – After four months of training, seven regions within the province of Manitoba have determined their teams for the upcoming Power Smart Manitoba Games to be held in Steinbach August 8th to 10th. The golf event will be 36 holes over two days at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club. Teams will be comprised of four boys and four girls. The scoring for the team competition will be best three out of four scores for boys and best two out of four for girls.
The coaching and training of young golfers (15 & under for boys and 17 & under for girls) has been provided by golf professionals within the regions. A focus has been placed on introduction to competitive golf, the rules of golf, mental preparation and course management. The training squad model is structured based on a similar model that has been used in preparation for the Western Canada Games and the Canada Games.
The Coaches for each region are:
Central Greg Hesom (Winkler GC)
Eastman Brian Guenther (Steinbach Fly-In GC)
Interlake Matt Lorenz (Elmhurst G&CC)
Parkland Scott MacCallum (Gilbert Plains G&CC)
Westman Dave Scinocca (Shilo CC)
Winnipeg Blue Tom Kinsman (Southwood G&CC)
Winnipeg Gold Darren McMillan (Shooters Family Golf Centre)
Eighty-five young golfers participated in the training and a 36-hole qualifier was conducted to determine each team from each region.
