February 2, 2019 - WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Saturday at the Maples Community Centre, the second Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship supported by Jennifer Fleming was presented before the Bantam AAA game between the Hawks 1 and the Interlake Lightning.
The Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship supported by Jennifer Fleming is presented annually to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to coaching hockey in Manitoba. The goal is to encourage students to continue coaching hockey while attending a post-secondary institution and beyond. The $1,200 scholarship will be applied to the recipient’s tuition.
This year’s recipient is Winnipeg Hawks AAA Bantam 1 Head Coach Aaron Kaatz.
Only twenty-three years old, Kaatz’ passion for hockey comes through. He has already been coaching for six years and just in December obtained his certification as a High Performance 1 Hockey Coach in the National Coaching Certification Program, where he is also a trained hockey instructor. Kaatz himself is a graduate of the Winnipeg Minor Hockey system and he is now in second year as the Head Coach for a Bantam Hawks team. Kaatz is completing a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Winnipeg.
“Teaching, coaching, and sharing the game of hockey was not only a passion for my Dad Jake and brother Wayne, it was ultimately their life’s work, pleasure and reward,” said Jennifer Fleming. “This scholarship is a way to carry forward their passion to the next generation of coaches.”
The Fleming family hockey obsession started in the early 1960’s when the family was young, which lead to Jake founding and operating the Canadian Professional Hockey Schools (CPHS) until 1991. Jake’s leadership was also instrumental in getting the AAA tier system started in Winnipeg, which makes tonight’s presentation to a AAA coach very special. Wayne’s love of coaching began with the CPHS. He went on to play four years for the Manitoba Bisons in the 1970s and was the team’s head coach for nine seasons in the 1980s. Wayne coached Team Canada in multiple Olympics, including the 2002 Gold Team, as well as numerous NHL teams.
Jennifer created the Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship, in memory of her father Jake Fleming and her brother Wayne Fleming, to recognize an upcoming Manitoba hockey coach who shows similar coaching and leadership traits that were characteristic of both Jake and Wayne. The Manitoba Foundation for Sports scholarship program administered by Sport Manitoba administers the scholarship.
