Team Manitoba track athlete Luc Deleau (Winnipeg) has been named the flag bearer for Team Manitoba at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
Luc won gold in the 400m and 200m despite being in 3rd place coming into the last 100m of each race, split 10.0 on the bronze medal 4x100m relay team and was part of the gold medal medley team. He closed things out for the 4x400m relay to win another gold.
Luc volunteered to run an extra relay (medley) to help the team succeed despite running more races than any other athlete in the competition. He was originally scheduled to take the relay off to rest but wanted to run another race. Luc is a leader on the team and has been an Academic All-Canadian at the University of Manitoba in the Asper School of Business. ⠀
Luc is 20 years-old and decided to join track competitively after a highly successful performance in a grade four school track meet and he has been competing ever since. These are not the first Games that Luc Deleau has attended, as he was also a member of the athletics team at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in his hometown of Winnipeg.
Besides being a student athlete, Luc also helps coach younger athletes with his club team once his training sessions for that day are done.
“It was an easy choice to select Luc as our flag bearer as he has shown leadership and strength throughout the entire week. He is a role model for his teammates and an excellent athlete," said Team Manitoba's Chef de Mission Patrick Kirby.
Team Manitoba looks forward to having Luc lead the Herd into the Closing Ceremonies at the 2019 WCSG, we know he will represent our team with pride.
