In a Canada Games with record-breaking performances from Team Manitoba and its athletes, Maddy Mitchell’s five medals and overall outstanding performance in Canoe Kayak is one to remember – and for that, she has been named the official flag bearer for Team Manitoba at today’s closing ceremonies.
“I’m extremely honoured and excited,” says Mitchell. “It’s tough to put into words, but it’s amazing to represent not only the paddlers, but all of Team Manitoba – to be chosen to do that really means a lot.”
In what was Mitchell’s second Canada Summer Games, she led all Team Manitoba athletes with five medals including gold in the C-4 200m, silver in both the C-1 5000m and C-2 1000m, and bronze in the C-1 1000m and C-2 200m races. Mitchell’s success on the podium was a big part of Team Manitoba setting a new provincial Canada Games record with 42 total medals.
“Maddy’s performance at these Games was a highlight for the team for sure,” says Chef de Mission Barry Moroz. “She’s a true pro in her work ethic and will-to-win, and we’re happy that she was able to shine on the national stage like she did. We’re proud to have Maddy represent the team as the flag bearer – it’s very well deserved.”
It was a big week for the Canoe Kayak team overall, contributing to ten Team Manitoba medals – six of which came on Friday in an incredible day on the water. Mitchell spoke proudly of the fact that four of her medals were won with her teammates, and the sentiment of sharing the honour was echoed through her reaction to being named flag bearer.
“All of Team Manitoba has worked so hard to get here, it’s not just me. I had the right tools at the right time in the right situation to have this success, so to represent the hard work of all of our athletes at the Closing Ceremony is really special.”
The Closing Ceremony starts at 2:00 pm today and features performances by Fred Penner, Sierra Noble, Brett Kissel, and more.
