Flag bearer Alana Lesperance scored in double overtime to lift Team Manitoba to an 8-7 win over host Alberta in ringette at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
The Herd had trailed 5-1 earlier in the game and were also down 7-4 in the final period before mounting the comeback. With the win, Team Manitoba finishes atop their pool at 3-0.
“Completely on a high,” said Lesperance. “It’s so exciting, especially with that big comeback, it’s like a dream.”
The star player from Winnipeg said the team never had any doubts despite being down early on the scoreboard.
“That’s why I think we came back is because we never gave up thinking about how we wanted to be here and how we wanted to give it our best.”
Head coach Rob Walker also had faith that his team could rally.
“We actually believed we could do that,” Walker said. “It was tough to talk to them at halftime but everyone knows we can come back, we have a lot of fire power on the team.”
And just moments after the exhilarating win, the coach was already looking ahead.
“This was just round robin,” he said. “There’s a lot more of this to come.”
