Two Manitoba snowboarders are brave enough to try something completely new to them at these Canada Winter Games. Liam Berger and Cole Steendam will be in the snowboard cross event today at Canyon Ski Resort. The event was first introduced in 2015 at the CWG in Prince George, B.C.
Braeden Demchuk is the head coach for Team Manitoba and explains the goal is to go super fast down the set course with little air off the jumps as you'll go faster on the snow. He notes the teams with more experience will obviously have an advantage, even when it comes to waxing their boards for speed and snow conditions.
Despite being the underdogs Liam and Cole were all smiles after a few training runs and shared that dropping out of the start box with three other racers is like nothing they've done before. After a full day on the snow they said they are gaining an appetite for speed.
Coach Demchuk says they will rely on their team's strengths which include a great level of comfort on a board. He adds they are focused on communicating with other experienced coaches and have truly appreciated the friendly advice they've received.
The athletes will run qualification heats in the morning from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m. with all riders moving on to the heats in the afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m. The medal presentations will be held at 3:30 p.m. The team invites everyone to come check out this exciting form of snowboarding which is growing in popularity around the world.
