Opening Ceremonies

A fantastic show kicked off the Games at Bell-MTS Place

Canada Games athletes from all provinces and territories marched through downtown Winnipeg last night, from RBC Convention Centre to Bell-MTS Place, before entering the arena floor to a swell of applause and excitement for the Opening Ceremony of the 50th Canada Games. Once seated, all in attendance including our 330 Team Toba athletes, accompanied by over 100 coaches, trainers, and mission staff, were treated to a spiritual and patriotic celebration of the Canada Summer Games.
After the teams filed in, highlighted by a raucous Team Manitoba hometown entrance, the program began with a prayer and blessing delivered by indigenous elders. Dignitaries that spoke to the athletes and fans at Bell-MTS Place tonight included Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba Janice FIlmon, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister. The ceremony also featured a trio of Canadian entertainers, including the Bros. Landreth, Coeur de Pirate, and Serena Ryder, who wrapped up the evening’s events.
The program was highlighted by the lighting of the torch, which was followed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declaring the Games open officially kicking off competition. Competition begins today with Team Toba male and female basketball, male softball, and baseball teams in action.
