Leading up to the 2023 Canada Winter Games, we are featuring the dedicated coaches who spend countless hours giving back to sport. Let’s get to know women’s hockey coach, Cassandra Groen!

How long have you been coaching this sport?

10 years

What is your favourite coaching memory?

One of my athletes was working so hard to learn to raise the puck. When she finally raised the puck in a game, she completely missed, and it went way over. Yet, when she came back to the bench was so excited to have finally raised the puck and told me she had done what I said and it worked. This is one of my favourite moments, as it is exactly why I coach! It’s not always for the medals, but also for helping people reach those small achievements.

Who is your role model in sport?

Hayley Wickenheiser

What do you look for in a Canada Games athlete?

I look for an athlete who is passionate, willing to learn and grow, and motivates and supports their teammates.

What are the team goals for the 2023 Canada Games?

Win gold!

What’s on your bucket list?

Be a goalie coach for Team Canada, and to travel to Greece
