Team Manitoba’s men’s hockey team is off to a good start at the 2019 Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta.

The Herd defeated British Columbia 4-2 Friday afternoon despite trailing 1-0 and 2-1 earlier in the game.

“It’s a great team win,” said captain Carson Lambos. “Everybody bought into the game plan. It lets us know that we can hopefully play with anyone.”

Justin Lies, Hunter Wallace, Dawson Pasternak, and Skyler Bruce all scored for Manitoba.Hockey BC Manitoba

“It was a real great start to the tournament,” said head coach Garth Mitchell. “We knew we were going to have a little adversity at the start of the game. Our goaltender held us in early. I just thought we got better every period and it’s something to build on. Big win for the guys…they’ve been waiting for this first game for a long time.”

The Herd will now take on host Alberta on Sunday before finishing up round robin action against Saskatchewan Monday morning.

“Our goal is to get better every time we go on the ice,” Mitchell said. “Tomorrow’s another day against a tough opponent so we’ll have to do that.”
