October 13, 2022, Winnipeg MB – Sport Manitoba awarded $21,600 in academic scholarships to 17 high school students, six university students, and six Manitoba coaches. The awards included the Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships, Sport Manitoba Coaching Bursaries, Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship supported by Jennifer Fleming, and Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships

$500 High School Scholarship 
  • Ayva Khan (Winnipeg – River Heights) is a multi-sport athlete in basketball, track and field, and volleyball, and graduated from Vincent Massey Collegiate Institute.
  • Brooke Schrader (Winnipeg – Deer Lodge) is a multi-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball and rowing, and graduated from Westwood Collegiate.
  • Dana Goertzen (Winnipeg – Lakeside Meadows) is a multi-sport athlete in track and field, soccer, and hockey, and graduated from Balmoral Hall School.
  • Dylan Gldsworthy (Oakbank) is a multi-sport athlete in hockey, volleyball, and track and field, and graduated from Miles Macdonell Collegiate.
  • Hunter Jacobucci, (Winnipeg – King Edward) plays beach and indoor volleyball and basketball, and graduated from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.
  • Ian McPeek (Winnipeg – Valhalla) is a multi-sport athlete in cross country, volleyball, golf, speed skating, hockey, and baseball and graduated from West Kildonan Collegiate.
  • Jonah Norman (Winnipeg – Royalwood) is a multi-sport athlete in baseball, hockey, and volleyball, and graduated from St. Pauls High School. 
  • Jordan Diacos (Winnipeg – Birchwood) is a fencer and graduated from Oak Park High School.
  • Kamryn Brown (Thompson) plays basketball and curls, and graduated from R. D. Parker Collegiate.
  • Kate-Leigh Heapy (Oak River) is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, badminton, and softball, and graduated from Hamiota Collegiate Institute.
  • Kendra Penner (La Salle) plays ringette and sails, and graduated from Sanford Collegiate.
  • Rowan Parnell (Winnipeg – Sturgeon Creek) is a multi-sport athlete in curling, volleyball, and badminton, and graduated from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate.
  • Ryder Duncan (Winnipeg – Meadowood) is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, baseball, and basketball, and graduated from Centre Scholaire Léo Rémillard.
  • Sarah Ekosky (Selkirk) is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, badminton, and soccer, and graduated from Collège Louis-Riel.
  • Teala Normand (La Salle) plays ringette and badminton and graduated from Sanford Collegiate.
  • Torrance St. Laurent (Winnipeg – Dakota Crossing) is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, and soccer, and graduated from Dakota Collegiate.
  • Wyatt Livingstone (Cartwright) is a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, badminton, and hockey, and graduated from Cartwright Collegiate Institute.

Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship – $3,000
  • Emily Zacharias, (Winnipeg – River Heights) is a curler and attends the University of Manitoba
  • Jeremy Love Jr., (Dauphin) plays volleyball and attends Brandon University

Silvio Sboto Memorial Rural Coach Award – $500
  • Ella Spence (West. St. Paul) coaches gymnastics and attends the University of Manitoba
  • Quinn Reid (Pine Falls) coaches lacrosse and attends Red River College Polytechnic

 

Jeff Collins Memorial Winnipeg Coach Award – $500
  • Felicia Daeninck (Winnipeg – Dakota Crossing) coaches ringette and attends the University of Manitoba
  • Rowan Parnell (Winnipeg – Sturgeon Creek) coaches freestyle ski and attends the University of Manitoba

Sport Manitoba is a not-for-profit organization and the lead planning, programming and funding agency for the development of amateur sport in Manitoba. Located at 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg, Sport Manitoba partners with over 100 organizations to deliver sport in the province and is responsible for programs including the Manitoba Games powered by Manitoba Hydro, Sport Manitoba Coaching, Team Manitoba, Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, Fit Kids Healthy Kids, and KidSport. The Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarship program administered by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of Sport Manitoba partners, who continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a post-secondary education on a full-time basis. The Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarship Program was established in 1992.

The Princess Royal Pan Am Scholarship Endowment Fund: provides financial support for Manitoba’s high-performance athletes in their pursuit of excellence at the national and international levels of competition while serving as a tribute to commemorate the Manitoba visit of Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal in 1999.

Silvio Sboto Memorial Rural Coach Award: Silvio Sboto was a dedicated and humble man who started learning judo in the late 50s after immigrating to Canada from his native Peru. He resided in Brandon for the last thirty years where he worked at the Seikeikan Judo Club. Silvio was the chair of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) for Judo Canada. Silvio spent 10 years as an NCCP Theory Course Conductor and attained Level 4 NCCP status. He also had his fifth-degree black belt and was a national ‘C’ referee in Judo. Recipients of this award receive a $500 bursary to be used toward their tuition.

Jeff Collins Memorial Winnipeg Coach Award: Jeff Collins’ expertise earned him a reputation as a coach’s coach. Jeff served as head coach and clinician for the Legion Athletic Camps at the International Peach Garden for 32 years. He was the convenor and co-meet director of the MHSAA’s provincial track and field champs from 1984 to 2001. Jeff attained his level 3 NCCP and also worked with world-class special needs athletes. In 2003, Jeff was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. Recipients of this award receive a $500 bursary to be used toward their tuition.

The Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship supported by Jennifer Fleming: Jennifer Fleming created the Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship, in memory of her father Jake Fleming and her brother Wayne Fleming, to recognize an upcoming Manitoba hockey coach who shows similar coaching and leadership traits that were characteristic of both Jake and Wayne.
